Meet the Hands Behind Shringarini
Share
A Shringarini lehenga does not begin with a sketch or a mood board. It begins with a person — a craftsperson sitting at a frame, needle in hand, thread in motion, hours dissolving into art.
The People Behind the Pieces
Every garment in our collection is the work of multiple skilled hands. A single lehenga might pass through the hands of a weaver, an embroiderer, a dyer, a tailor, and a finisher — each one contributing their expertise to the final piece. These are not factory workers following a template. They are craftspeople with decades of experience, personal styles, and deep pride in their work.
The Embroiderers of Lucknow
In the narrow lanes of Lucknow's old city, families have practised the art of chikankari and aari embroidery for generations. Our embroiderers here are predominantly women who learned their craft from their mothers and grandmothers. They work from their homes, stitching intricate patterns onto silk and georgette with a patience and precision that no machine can match.
Many of our artisans in Lucknow have been working with us since Shringarini's earliest days. They know our aesthetic instinctively — the weight of embroidery we prefer, the density of zari work that makes a lehenga feel luxurious without being heavy, the way a motif should flow across a dupatta's border.
The Weavers of Varanasi
Varanasi has been the heart of India's silk weaving tradition for over 2,000 years. The city's weavers — many from the Ansari community — work on handlooms that have been in their families for generations, producing the lustrous Banarasi silk that forms the foundation of some of our most treasured pieces.
Weaving a single metre of fine Banarasi silk with a zari border can take a skilled weaver an entire day. The complexity of the pattern, the weight of the metallic thread, and the precision required to maintain the weave's integrity make this one of the most demanding textile arts in the world.
The Bandhani Artisans of Jamnagar
In Jamnagar, Gujarat, the Khatri community has been practising bandhani for over 400 years. Our bandhani artisans — both men and women — can tie thousands of knots in a single day, their fingers moving with a speed and accuracy that comes only from a lifetime of practice.
What strikes visitors to a bandhani workshop is the silence. The work requires such concentration that the room is often completely quiet, broken only by the soft sound of thread being pulled tight. It is meditative work — and the artisans speak of it that way, as a practice that requires not just skill but a certain quality of attention.
The Latkan Makers
Our latkans and potli accessories are made by a small group of artisans who specialise in bead work, mirror embroidery, and pearl stringing. These craftspeople work with extraordinary delicacy — assembling each latkan piece by piece, ensuring that the weight, balance, and visual rhythm of every tassel is perfect.
No two Shringarini latkans are identical. The slight variations in bead placement, the individual character of each hand-strung pearl cluster — these are not imperfections. They are the signatures of the human hands that made them.
Our Commitment to Our Artisans
At Shringarini, we believe that the people who make our clothes deserve to be treated with the same respect as the clothes themselves. We pay fair wages, work with artisans on long-term relationships rather than one-off orders, and actively seek to understand and support the challenges they face.
When you choose Shringarini, you are not just buying a beautiful garment. You are participating in a chain of care — from the artisan's hands to your wardrobe — that sustains livelihoods, preserves traditions, and keeps India's extraordinary craft heritage alive.
"I have been doing this work for 30 years. My mother taught me, and I am teaching my daughter. When someone wears what I make on their wedding day, I feel like I am part of their happiness."
— A Shringarini embroiderer, Lucknow
We are grateful to every artisan who puts their skill, time, and heart into a Shringarini creation. This brand exists because of them.
